Due to Gredin's appearance in the suit of leaves, and one of the things Tanya uses to summon him is a leaf, it can be argued that Gredin is strongly tied to the elements, or part of nature itself. Henry Hanratty tells Tanya that the fey are also very protective of certain plants and fauna which could also give insight into this. Gredin also is shown to possess supernatural abilities and to have a very close link with nature, particularly wind and leaves as he uses leaves to protect Tanya on more than one occasion, either manipulating them with his hands or physically becoming part of the elements as seen in One Wish. Eldritch mentions that the Hedgwitch was a master in glamour, including changing the colors of eyes, whether Gredin got his glamour from her is also unknown. He would have to alter his ears, eyes and wings in order to blend in. Gredin is also implied to be familiar with glamour, as he appears to Tanya with a human appearance at the campsite of the Tino's circus, and similarly on the doorstep of the cottage Tanya and her mother were staying in whilst visiting Spinny Whicket.

After Red and Warwick decipher a map of the fairy realm, realising it perfectly mirrors the British Isles, and Gredin's knowledge of the realm in the area around Tickey End (Tinker's End in the fey realm), his familiarity may imply he is from that particular area of the realm but this is never confirmed.

His age is unknown, but as a fey, he does not appear to age the same way as humans, as Tanya has known him all her life but his physical description is consistently described as young. This explains much of Gredin's disposition throughout the series, as a very harsh individual. During a conversation between Florence and Tanya, it is revealed that guardianship is forced upon the descendents of fey who took part in the changeling trade after the splitting of the fairy courts. His occupation as guardian of a mortal child however does gives clues as to his ancestry. Even his name may not be his real one, as many fey do not present themselves by their true name as names within the fairy realm hold power. Like the other fairies throughout the series, little is known about Gredin. After the events of The Thirteen Secrets, Gredin and Tanya come to agreement regarding guardianship, agreeing that Gredin will only come to her if she asks for him, giving them both some freedom. Tanya and Gredin have a fraught and tense relationship throughout the series, with Tanya resenting his prescence in her life, a sentiment Gredin revealed was mutual. Gredin is a fey man and Tanya Fairchild's guardian, This duty was assigned to him due to his ancestral links to the changeling trade, a dishonourable practise which is one of the primary causes of the second sight in human children.
